Donald Trump and his wife Melania Trump were friends with Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton before the 2016 election.

Years before Donald and Hillary became rivals and slung dirt at each other on the campaign trail, Bill was a regular at the former president's New York golf club, and the Clintons were guests at the real estate mogul's third wedding.

Bill and Hillary were among the many famous figures who attended Donald and Melania's wedding ceremony at the Episcopal Church of Bethesda-By-the-Sea and wedding reception at Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Jan. 25, 2005, the Palm Beach Post reported.

Bill reportedly discussed politics and his golf game during the occasion, which also had Barbara Walters, Shaquille O'Neal, Rudy Giuliani, Billy Joel, Gayle King, Heidi Klum, Simon Cowell, and Star Jones in attendance.

Hillary addressed her and Bill's attendance at the Trumps' wedding while on the campaign trail in 2016.

"I happened to be planning to be in Florida and I thought it would be fun to go to his wedding because it is always entertaining," she said at the time.

Donald formed a friendship with the Clintons after they moved from Washington, D.C., to Westchester County in New York in the early 2000s.

He bonded with Bill over golf, inviting the ex-president to join his then-newly rebuilt Trump National Golf Club in Westchester.

The New York Times' Maureen Dowd reported that Trump told her one of the reasons he decided to redevelop the golf club was that "he knew Bill Clinton would need a place to play."

Trump reportedly hung photos of Bill at the country club, and the latter still had a locker there by June 2016.

"I'm proud to have him," Donald said of Bill in 2003, according to Golf Digest. "He's a great gentleman, a good golfer, and a wonderful guy."

In 2009, Bill and Donald played together during a charity golf tournament held at the businessman's country club, as seen in a video obtained by the Associated Press.

Photos obtained by Golf Digest also showed Hillary playing golf with her husband there through the years.

Bill told the magazine in 2012 that his wife and their daughter Chelsea spent his 65th birthday playing a round of golf with him at the club.

Donald was also a donor of the Clintons, with his foundation giving the Clinton Foundation $100,000 in the early 2000s, according to Dowd.

He also donated a total of $4,700 to Hillary's Senate campaign.

The friendship between the Trumps and Clintons appeared to have broken down since Donald and Hillary's respective 2016 presidential campaigns, where they traded attacks and accusations.

Since Donald won the 2016 election, Hillary has criticized his presidency and rhetoric in multiple interviews and speeches.

In November last year, Hillary compared Donald -- who is running for reelection -- to Adolf Hitler and said she believed that her former rival securing another term in the White House "would be the end of our country as we know it."
