Kate Middleton tried to build a friendship with her sister-in-law, Meghan Markle, but she saw some red flags in the latter's attitude, according to a royal expert.

When Markle joined the royal family, fans were expecting that the royal trio -- Prince Wiliam, Middleton and Prince Harry -- would become the fab four. However, it didn't happen because the Duke and Duchess of Sussex decided to have a separate household from the Prince and Princess of Wales and eventually quit their royal duties and moved to the United States. Interestingly, Ingrid Seward, a royal biographer and editor-in-chief of Majesty Magazine, has revealed that Middleton did try to befriend Markle before the latter's exit with her husband.

"Kate tried to get along with Meghan," Seward told The Sun's Fabulous. "Harry had been part of their little Kensington Palace family and Kate knew he wanted to be married. She also longed for him to be happy. But Kate saw the warning signs in Meghan's behaviour, especially around the time of the wedding."

Markle previously made headlines for allegedly being a bridezilla. There was an issue involving the tiara she wanted to wear on her big day, and the two Duchesses reportedly had a row over the bridesmaid dresses.

There were reports that Markle made Middleton cry over Princess Charlotte's dress. However, the "Suits" actress denied the allegation in her and Prince Harry's interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021, saying that the "reverse happened," suggesting that it was Middleton who made her cry.

Seward added that while the signs of a rift between Prince William and Prince Harry's wives were not obvious, another factor was reportedly Markle not wanting to be second best. However, she's only married to a spare while Middleton is the future queen consort.

"But we now know that Meghan hated being considered second best to the then Duchess of Cambridge," Seward continued. "Kate had bagged the number one man whereas Meghan only had the 'spare' son in Prince Harry. Most women wouldn't even think about that. But Meghan was so insecure and anxious about her own status she took everything as a slight."

Sarah Hewson, a broadcaster and royal correspondent, recently appeared on The Sun's "Royal Exclusive" and shared the same opinion, claiming that Markle didn't want to play the second fiddle. She added that had the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stayed with the royals, they would have been "front and center."

"We're told Meghan didn't like playing second fiddle well, they wouldn't have been playing second fiddle right now would they?" Hewson said.

"They would have been front and centre and they could have played such a key role and I think it's really, really sad to see just how things have changed. He and Meghan both actually could have made such a difference."
