Kim Kardashian Discloses Her Son's Rare Skin Disorder
Kim Kardashian shared that her son has a rare skin condition during a conversation about her own experience with psoriasis.
On the 'She MD' podcast, the 43-year-old explained, "It came from my mom, went to me ... and I passed it on in a different form to my son, who has vitiligo very mildly." Psoriasis is "a chronic disease in which the immune system becomes overactive, causing skin cells to multiply too quickly," the National Institute of Skin Diseases says.
Kardashian added that her son's condition, which occurs when cells that produce skin pigment cease to work, is currently "under control."
She said, "I didn't know anything about it, but having to learn about it and figuring out where it came from and that it's hereditary and just learning more and being able to share that [has been a blessing]."
She did not specify which of her sons; Saint, 8, or Psalm, 5, is the one with vitiligo, a condition that Pfizer reports affects just 0.5 to 1 percent of the global population.
Notably, the condition was famously experienced by Michael Jackson.
'The Kardashians' star also mentioned that her children has eczema, which is "a group of inflammatory skin conditions that cause itchiness, dry skin, rashes, scaly patches, blisters and skin infections," according to the National Eczema Association.
Kardashian, who shares daughters North, 11, and Chicago, 6, with her ex-husband Kanye West, did not elaborate further on her child's health. However, she shared her personal battle with psoriasis during her 30s.
"I'll do anything," she told Dr. Thais Aliabadi about her treatment efforts. "I've tried ... special herbs, the holistic way, a celery juice diet for six weeks, every topical cream, every soap from natural to unnatural."
The SKIMS founder first became aware of her psoriasis at Mason Disick's first or second birthday party, where she wore an uncomfortable sequined dress.
Although Kim saw temporary relief from her psoriasis symptoms after receiving a cortisone shot, the condition resurfaced five years later and has remained persistent. The Hulu star humorously remarked, "It's here to stay."
Kim has been open about her struggle with psoriasis, including sharing a selfie in March 2019 to highlight its spread across her face.
In January, she shared a "painful" episode of the skin condition affecting her entire leg on Instagram.
"I don't know what's happening but I got to figure this out," Kim stated at the time. "This is crazy. I've tried everything. Psoriasis sucks." That same month, she defended the use of a tanning bed in her Skkn by Kim office, explaining that it helps alleviate her symptoms.
Her mother, Kris Jenner, passed the condition on to her, with Kim humorously noting in Monday's episode of 'The Kardashians' that she is "lucky" to be the only one among her siblings who deals with it.
