King Charles Will Face 'Nightmare' If Meghan Markle Runs For Office And Wins: Expert
King Charles III and the royal family could face a "real headache" if Meghan Markle runs for office while still holding a royal title, according to a royal expert.
Rumors that the Duchess of Sussex has political ambitions have been around since she and her husband Prince Harry gave up being working royals and moved to California.
While Markle has never directly confirmed or denied the speculation, the rumors were reignited this week when royal correspondent Kinsey Schofield suggested that the former actress plans to endorse Vice President Kamala Harris for president to jump-start her own political career.
If Markle does run for office as the Duchess of Sussex, royal commentator Natasha Livingstone believes it would be a "nightmare" for King Charles and Prince William.
"If she was to keep her title, Duchess of Sussex, that would just be a real headache for the royal family who are notoriously non-political," Livingstone told the Daily Mail's "Palace Confidential."
"And then to have a royal title associated with any political office would just be a nightmare for them, frankly," she continued.
Markle has never formally endorsed a presidential candidate since becoming a member of the British royal family, though she and Prince Harry did campaign vocally for Americans to vote back in 2020.
Unnamed insiders close to Markle previously debunked the rumors that she plans to run for office.
"While there's no denying she is interested and engaged in politics as a topic, she harbors no ambition to enter a career in politics herself," a source told Vanity Fair in 2020.
However, Schofield told GB News this week that Markle wants to be more actively involved this time around and endorse who could potentially become the first woman, Black woman and person of South Asian descent to be elected U.S. president.
The royal and entertainment reporter suggested that the duchess publicly endorsing Harris, with whom she's had friendly interactions in the past, would be her way of getting "her foot in the door" of politics.
"Meghan wants to be included. This is potentially a very historic election," Schofield claimed.
"This could be her first step in the door," she noted. "I think that Kamala would welcome it because all press is good press at this point. You have to get people excited about you, and sometimes that's throwing everybody a curveball like Meghan Markle."
During the 2020 presidential election, Markle expressed support for Harris after she was chosen by President Joe Biden to be his running mate.
"I'm so excited to see that kind of representation," Markle said of Harris during an interview with Gloria Steinem. "You know, for me, being biracial, growing up, whether it was a doll or a person in office, you need to see someone who looks like you in some capacity."
"As many of us believe, you can only be what you can see," the duchess continued. "And in the absence of that, how can you aspire to something greater than what you see in your own world? I think maybe now we're starting to break-through in a different way."
Harris also spoke out in support of Markle in 2019 after the former "Suits" star opened up about her mental health struggles while pregnant with her first child.
"This is incredibly important. We must remember that it's a sign of strength to show emotion," the former senator wrote on X, formerly Twitter, at the time. "Meghan, we are with you."
