However, in the wake of this triumph, journalists asked the president why he was determined to get it done during his administration as he has withdrawn his candidacy for president.

"You're stuck with me as president for a while, kid. There's no way out. You've got me for at least another 100 days or so," Biden told the crowd of reporters after the exchange.

According to 'The Moscow Times,' the prison exchange was the most complex between the East and the West since the Cold War. Twenty-four prisoners were exchanged at a Turkish airport.

"The deal that secured their freedom was a feat of diplomacy," a press release from the White House said. "All told, we've negotiated the release of 16 people from Russia - including five Germans and seven Russian citizens who were political prisoners in their own country."

One of those released from Russia was Evan Gershkovich, a 'Wall Street Journal' correspondent.

"We are overwhelmed with relief and elated for Evan and his family, as well as for the others who were released," 'WSJ' Editor Emma Tucker said in a statement.

She continued: "At the same time, we condemn in the strongest terms Vladimir Putin's regime in Russia, which orchestrated Evan's 491-day wrongful imprisonment based on sham accusations and a fake trial as part of an all-out assault on the free press and truth."
