A 17-year-old student died and several were injured after a fatal stabbing at Spring High School in Houston, Wednesday morning.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia confirmed that the event took place at about 7 a.m. at the school cafeteria.

The Spring Independent School District's police force was the first agency to respond about 60 seconds after the fight broke out; Harris County Sheriffs officers arrived quickly after, Garcia said in a statement to the press.

"We have three persons of interest our investigators are interviewing at the moment," Garcia said. "There has been some information that this may have been gang related, but it's a very dynamic scene and investigators are collecting information. We'll work through that as we get it."

One person died at the scene, another was flown by Life Flight medical helicopter to Memorial Hermann - The Texas Medical Center and two other were taken to Houston Northwest Medical Center for treatment, according to reports. One of the injured is in hospital awaiting surgery, the other two -- who suffered minor injuries -- are now in a stable condition.

Garcia suggested that there was a confrontation that escalated into a fight, and then weapons were pulled out.

"There is some information that this may have been gang related," Garcia said. The police have not discovered the weapon that was used in the crime.

This is the first time officers had to be called to the school for an instance for gang violence, according to a Harris County Sheriffs Officers release.
