The iPad 5 is set to surpass the iPad Mini 2 in the fourth quarter of 2013, as the former is projected to see shipments in excess of 10 million units compared to roughly 2 million for the latter.

According to CNET, the availability of the iPad Mini 2, which is also being referred to as the Retina Mini is slated to have limitations in the fourth quarter.

While Apple's iPad 5 is seemingly on schedule for an October launch, the same can't be said for the Retina version of the Mini.

Rhoda Alexander, the director of Tablet and Monitor Research over at IHS, elaborated on the uncertainty behind the release date for the iPad Mini 2

"The Retina Mini looks less certain for that time. Manufacturing volumes on that would match better with a Q114 [first quarter 2014] launch," she said.

In terms of its specs, the 7.9-inch Retina Mini is expected to come equipped with a 2,048x1,536 resolution display, which will would make it strikingly similar to the 9.7-inch iPad.

The site also reported that "packing that many pixels into a smaller screen will boost pixel density to about 324 pixels per inch, significantly higher than iPad 4's 264 pixels per inch."
