According to a tweet from Microsoft's developers account, it soon may be extremely difficult for consumers to get their hands on a Surface 2 tablet.

The company tweeted on Friday "Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 are close to selling out. All those buyers are gonna need apps. Your move: developer.microsoft.com"

It is unclear at the time just how few are left and what exactly the company considers to be "nearly sold-out."

The company also announced the news on their blog, stating:

"You may have heard that the pre-order stock of the Arc Touch Mouse Surface Edition, Type Cover 2 in Purple and Black, and Touch Cover 2 has sold out at Microsoft stores in the U.S. It also looks like pre-order stock of the Surface 2 (64GB) and Surface pro 2 (256 GB and 512GB) are close to selling out-also at Microsoft Stores. We're pretty happy about this of course given we just unveiled Surface 2, Surface Pro 2 and the new accessories to the world only a week or so ago."

According to CNET, the Surface Pro 2 is what Microsoft is calling a full laptop in tablet design, while the Surface 2 runs a stripped-down version of Windows 8. Pre-orders for the devices opened on Sept. 24, and they'll hit store shelves Oct. 22.

This is a radical change from the company's first generation Surface RT devices, where they built many more tablets than they needed. In July, they booked a $900 million write-down for excess inventory and revealed they had only generated about $853 million in revenue from the devices since their debut last fall.

The company will still offer the older models at a discounted rate alongside the updates devices.
