In what should be a highly competitive football matchup of the Capital One Cup, it will be the West Ham United facing off against Burnley on Tuesday night.

The Capital One Cup is conducted via knockout format. Unlike the FA Cup, only 92 teams can enter, which consist of 20 Premier League squads as well as 72 Football League clubs.

A distinct trait of the respective tournament is that its semi-finals are played over two legs with the winners obtaining qualification into the UEFA Europa League unless the teams have already gotten into the Champions League through their league ranking.

If the latter is the case, then a berth into the Europa League will be given to the highest-ranked squad from the Premier League team that has yet to already be qualified for Europe.

The initial idea for the Capital One Cup was brought about by Stanley Rous, who saw the competition as a consolation prize for teams that were already eliminated from the FA Cup. However, Alan Hardaker was the one who ultimately orchestrating it into action.
