The X Factor brought fans their first live show of the season, and with it came the elimination of four hopefuls.

As the singing competition whittled its numbers from 16 to 12, fans had to say goodbye to Danie Geimer, Josh Levi, James Kenney, and RoxXY Montana.

The first acts of the evening came form the Girls group. Judge Demi Lovato was in the hot seat, as she had to determine which of her four contestants would get the ax. Ellona Santiago set the bar high with her much-praised rendition of Britney Spears' Til The World Ends but both Rion Paige and Khaya Cohen received complements on their versions of Lovato's Skyscraper and Duffy's Mercy. Geimer was the only one of the four who dropped the ball, the Wrecking Ball that is, and it cost her a spot in the Top 12.

Next it was time for the Boys group. Under the direction of judge Paulina Rubio, these performers have faced quite a few ups and downs this season while their mentor has been booed by the crowed for some of her decisions. Josh Levi kicked off the round with a rendition of Rihanna's Only Girl In The World while Carlos Guevara took on Swedish House Mafia's Don't You Worry Child and Carlito Olivero brought in the backup dancers for Santana's Maria, Maria. Olstad, however, was likened to a funeral director for his rendition of Bon Jovi's Always and ultimately winds up receiving the boot.

The Over 25s took their rehearsals to the gym and judge Kelly Rowland's interesting coaching techniques may have paid off for three contestants. Lillie McCloud started the ball rolling with her version of Percy Sledge's When a Man Loves a Woman while Jeff Gutt tried his hand at Pink's Try and Rachel Potter chose Lee Ann Womack's tearjerker, I Hope You Dance. While are the performances were above average, Kenney was knocked out following his rendition of Red by Daniel Marriweather.

The last section of the evening was Simon Cowell's Groups category. While the program slightly rushed through the Groups due to a time crunch, Sweet Suspense performed Icona Pop's I Love It, Alex and Sierra took on and acoustic version of Robin Thicke's Blurred Lines, and Restless Road closed with Katy Perry's Roar. RoxXY Montana left the competition following an odd arrangement of Royals by Lorde.

The X Factor airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.
