Central Connecticut State University Shooting: Lockdown in Effect and Suspect in Custody [VIDEO]
An armed man spotted on the campus of Central Connecticut State University in New Britain, Conn., Monday prompted a campus-wide lockdown as SWAT teams swarmed the area on a hunt for the suspect.
According to the Hartford Courant, a suspect was led away in handcuffs at approximately 2:30 p.m., though the lockdown is still in effect as police determine if others are involved.
A warning posted to the school's website read "Campus Emergency. Remain Inside Buildings. Stay in Place! Stay Away from Windows. Police Are on the Scene." SWAT teams swarmed an area around the residence halls after a man who was believed to be carrying weapons was spotted.
"Somebody was seen either with a gun or was thought to have a gun," University spokesman Mark McLaughlin told The Sydney Morning Herald.
The man was believed to be carrying a backpack, had a sword and sheath strapped to his back, and was wearing a mask, camouflage pants, knee pads and a vest.
Approximately 12,000 students are currently affected by the lockdown. The incident comes just days after a shooting at Los Angeles International Airport in California left a TSA agent dead and only weeks after a shooting a Nevada middle school left a teacher dead.
The possible threat of a shooting also comes just under a year after a deadly rampage at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. roughly 40 miles away from the University. The 2012 attack, which left 26 dead, including 20 children, prompted calls for more gun control in the United States.
Two other New Britain schools are also on lockdowns as the situation continues to unfold.
