Mayor Rob Ford Admits Crack Use & Shares Weight Loss Plans To Matt Lauer On 'TODAY' After Stripped Of Powers (VIDEO)
Toronto Mayor Rob Ford admitted to crack and cocaine use again and pledged he will begin a weight loss program during his TODAY interview, which aired on Tuesday.
After host Matt Lauer reminded Ford that he lied when he was initially confronted about his crack cocaine use last month, the mayor admitted to using the drug in a "few isolated incidents" while drunk.
"When they said 'do you use crack cocaine?' I said 'no I don't use crack cocaine,'" Ford explained to Lauer. "When they said 'have you tried crack cocaine?' I said 'yes, I tried crack cocaine.'"
After a tense back-and-forth exchange with Lauer, Ford said he wishes he could see the controversial film clip.
"I could barely remember it," he confessed. "I was very, very inebriated."
When asked if he is receiving drug treatment, he said he isn't, but will instead focus on losing weight.
"I'm not in any drug treatment programs,'' Ford said. "I have a weight issue. I've been training every day. All I can say is actions speak louder than words. I invite you to come back. Give me five or six months, and if they don't see a difference, I'll eat my words."
Ford was joined by his staunch supporter, his brother Councilman Doug Ford, who defended him during the interview. Lauer asked Doug if he has any concerns for Rob.
"His weight issues, when he goes on a binge, if you want to call it binge-drinking, and I hear about it, yeah, it's concerning,'' Doug admitted to Lauer. "Do I know, on a personal side, has Rob been 100 percent honest? No, he hasn't."
It was revealed last month that Toronto police obtained a video that shows the mayor using drugs. Rob was defiant in his press conference on Halloween and said he will not step down as the city's leader.
"I have no reason to resign," Ford told reporters on Oct. 31. "I'm going to be out doing what the people elected me to do and that's save taxpayers money and run a great government that we've been running for the last three years."
He has since admitted to purchasing drugs during his tenure as mayor in Canada's largest city. On Monday, Toronto's city council voted to have him stripped of his powers and have it reassigned to the deputy mayor, according to BBC.
While the council doesn't have the right to remove him from office, they voted to have the budget in his office reduced and other powers transferred to deputy mayor Norman Kelly. Rob called the vote a "coup d'état" and a "dictatorship."
After refusing to apologize again for his misdeeds he told the city council, "You are absolutely telling everybody that voted in the last municipal election that their vote does not count."
