Thanksgiving 2013 Stores Opened: Costco and Nordstrom to Stay Closed While Walmart, Kmart, and Target Remain Open
Costco and Nordstrom choose to stay closed while other stores like Walmart, Kmart, and Target capitalize on the holiday shopping season by staying open on Thanksgiving night.
News of the fact that Walmart and Target decided to keep their doors open with some even choosing to launch Black Friday deals earlier than usual, got many people riled up as the move was perceived as the mega-retail stores manipulating customers and also for keeping their employees from celebrating with their families. On the contrary Costco and Nordtrom are not trying to cash in and get a piece of the pie, and are being lauded for that.
"Our employees work especially hard during the holiday season, and we simply believe that they deserve the opportunity to spend Thanksgiving with their families," Paul Latham, vice president of Costco wrote in an email to The Huffington Post. "Nothing more complicated than that."
The CEO of BJ's suggested that it wasn't something she had to put any thought into, it only seemed obvious.
"Maybe call me old-fashioned, but I feel that it's an easy decision to make [to stay closed on Thanksgiving]," Laura Sen, the CEO of BJ's Wholesale Club, told the publication.
Kmart announcesd that it would be opening its doors at 6 a.m. on Thanksgiving and will stay open for 41 hours straight through Black Friday. Walmart will be open two hours earlier than it did last year on Thanksgiving, at 6 p.m., and Target will push it back by an hour from last year and open at 8 p.m.
