'Duck Dynasty' Phil Robertson Leaving the Show For Anti-Gay Comments Has Retailer Dropping 'Dynasty' Merchandise From Its Shelves
Southern restaurant and country store chain Cracker Barrel has removed "selected products" that "might offend" some diners days after Duck Dynasty cast member Phil Robertson's anti-gay comments in a GQ magazine interview went public.
Not long after Robertson was suspended from the A&E reality show for his offensive remarks, the food chain posted the following statement on its Facebook page Saturday, Dec. 21.
"Cracker Barrel's mission is Pleasing People. We operate within the ideals of fairness, mutual respect and equal treatment of all people. These ideals are the core of our corporate culture. We continue to offer Duck Commander products in our stores.
"We removed selected products which we were concerned might offend some of our guests while we evaluate the situation. We continually evaluate the products we offer and will continue to do so."
There is been no word from the company as to exactly which products "might offend" buyers.
UPDATE: On Sunday, Cracker Barrel changed their mind and posted a new message on its Facebook page:
"You told us we made a mistake. And, you weren't shy about it. You wrote, you called and you took to social media to express your thoughts and feelings. You flat out told us we were wrong. We listened.
"Today, we are putting all our Duck Dynasty products back in our stores. And, we apologize for offending you."
The restaurant is the first major retailer to announce any action since Robertson's interview hit the Web. The family's merchandise empire from their hit show saw sales of $400 million in 2013, according to Forbes.
Speaking to GQ for its January 2013 issue, Robertson compared homosexuality to bestiality and also said, "It seems like, to me, a vagina -- as a man -- would be more desirable than a man's anus." The duck hunter-turned-TV star responded to backlash about his comments by saying, "I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me."
Robertson has been "suspended indefinitely" from the reality series, the network announced on Dec. 18. However, on Jan. 15, A&E will begin airing new episodes of the show that include scenes featuring the Dynasty patriarch. The network has no plans of cutting Robertson out of segments that have already been filmed.
Louisiana Governor Defends Phil Robertson's Anti-Gay Remarks
A source told E! News that the Robertson family is "very serious" about leaving the reality show after Phil was placed on hiatus.
"They're an extremely tight-knit family and they're not going to let this get in the way," the insider connected to the family explained. "[Phil] is the reason for their success-they're not going to abandon him. They're also not about to let anyone threaten their religious beliefs."
The family released a statement on the Duck Commander website on Dec. 19, saying, "We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith."
Duck Dynasty is in the middle of its fourth season. A&E will air a Duck marathon on Sunday, Dec. 22.
