1. Lorde

The British teenage singer's hit Royals dominated the radio. The song expressed maturity with a unique quality that is rarely seen in the Top 40 chart, let alone from a teenager. While Royals soared to the top, the singer's next hit, Team, gradually made its way onto the radio, expressing the singer's softer and darker persona.

2. Icona Pop

The two spunky girls who sing I Love It made their mark with a song that caught the ear of every listener who has taste for fascinating hits.

3. Fifty Shades of Grey

Even though the book was published in 2011, this was the year that it became one of the most talked about series in years. The story of Anastasia Steele's erotic relationship with the dominating Christian Grey was one of the most popular franchises of the year, and it was announced it would become a film. After months of speculation on who would be brave enough to play the carnal couple, Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan were officially cast.

4. Miles Teller

The actor who made audiences cry in Rabbit Hole had a stunning year with hit films like Project X and 21 and Over. He's currently on his way to more success in Divergent and That Awkward Moment alongside Zac Efron.

5. Orange is the New Black

The series that was only available through Netflix drew audiences in with a story about money, drugs and prison. From the creator of Weeds, this series became a Netflix original.
