Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez ignited rumors they are getting back together after they were photographed together in early January, but an insider said they were in touch way even in late 2013.

The 19-year-old Boyfriend singer reached out to Gomez, 21, after she cancelled her tour due to a reported battle with lupus, a source told Perez Hilton.

"Justin reached out to Selena after she cancelled the tour. He wanted to make sure she was OK and healthy. He cares about her a lot," the source said. "I don't know if they'll get back together, but he wanted to see her and spend time with her."

Gomez's battle with lupus flared up again in December 2013, forcing her to cancel her tour, the website reported.

"Selena has been going full throttle the past few years and her Lupus is really catching up with her right now," a source said at the time. "She knows that she needs to take some time to address the disease and look after herself better if she wants to live a full and healthy life."

Rumors of the two singers rekindling their relationship began after they were spotted hanging out in Bieber's California neighborhood. The speculation escalated when Bieber posted on Jan. 4 an Instagram photo of Gomez wrapping her arms around him.

They started dating in 2010 but ended their relationship in late 2012.

Neither singer has commented on the rumors of them getting back together. They spent New Year's apart and Gomez shared an Instagram picture showing her celebrated the holidays with friends and some apple cider.

"Apple cider and my girls. Happy New Year my loves. Love you all endlessly," she captioned the photo.
