Actor Matthew McConaughey has officially landed the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his work in Dallas Buyers Club, edging out the likes of Mandela: Walk To Freedom's Idris Elba, Captain Phillips' Tom Hanks, All Is Lost's Robert Redford, and 12 Years A Slave's Chiwetel Ejiofor.

When the awards show first started out, there was just one category for Best Actor. However, the original title has changed since, as the respective category ended up being split between the drama and comedy/musical genres.

Beforehand, the title that was used was Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture in 2005.

The very first Golden Globe Awards ceremony took place in January 1944 in Los Angeles at the 20th-Century Fox studios. However, since 1961, the highly anticipated festivities have been held at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Calif., which is where it has stayed ever since.

Interestingly enough, the NBC network had the exclusive rights to broadcast the respective festivities, eventually the announcement was made that there wouldn't be any limitations imposed on other media outlets covering the press conference, announcing those projects and actors who were winners.

Daniel Day-Lewis had been last year's Golden Globe winner for the Best Actor in a Motion Picture Drama for his work on Lincoln.
