The 2014 Oscar nominees were announced Thursday, Jan. 16, and while some nominees were expected, a few surprises and snubs did happen.

Some notable exclusions from this year's list include Spike Jonze for direction in Her; Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix in Her for Best Actor; Emma Thompson in Saving Mr. Banks for Best Actress; Oprah Winfrey in Lee Daniels' The Butler for Supporting Actress; and Blue is the Warmest Color for Foreign Language Film.
