It takes Michael Rooker a lot longer to step into the role of Yondu than the zombie fighting Merle Dixon.

Six hours in makeup and wardrobe to be exact.

Guardians of the Galaxy has a cast of aliens, some of which require help from CGI while others are, such a Rooker's character of Yondu, will achieve their look primarily through costuming.

"As you can see from some of the photos out there, I'm not in a loincloth," Rooker explained in an interview with Unrendered. I don't have a major, major fin thing that goes down my back. We haven't visually gone with the way that Yondu was in the comics."

While Yondu may look a little different than Guardians fans are used to, Rooker promises the Marvel Phase Two film will honor the colorful pallet of the comic books while associate producer Jonathan Schwartz has teased on old-school sci-fi element.

"When James Gunn came aboard he brought a completely unique visual sensibility to it, harkening back to pulpy '50s science fiction," Schwartz told SFX Magazine (via Comic Book Movie). "One of the things that he mentioned in his original pitch was that science fiction as we understand it has become greyer and sleeker and blacker and darker, this kind of Blade Runner world. We all love Blade Runner but that's not all that science fiction can be, so the world that you're going to see in Guardians of the Galaxy is colorful and bright and pulpy, but it's also lived-in and grounded."

Fans can get a glimpse of this new world in the mid-credit scene from Thor: The Dark World (see video below), and see it in full when Guardians of the Galaxy hits theaters on Aug. 1.
