Elizabeth Vargas 20/20 Interview VIDEO: Reveals Stuggle With Alcholism
20/20 anchor Elizabeth Vargas is an alcoholic, and the reporter sat down to explain her situation to Good Morning America's George Stephanopoulos while her mother took time to talk to 20/20's David Muir.
"I am. I am an alcoholic," Vargas said. "It took me a long time to admit that to myself. It took me a long time to admit it to my family, but I am."
After creating a healthy resume through various jobs across the networks, Vargas suddenly disappeared from her spot on 20/20 last fall. In November, the New York Daily News broke the story that the co-anchor was seeking treatment for alcohol addiction.
"Like so many people, I am dealing with addiction. I realized I was becoming increasingly dependent on alcohol. And feel fortunate to have recognized it for the problem it was becoming," Vargas told the New York Daily News at the time. "I am in treatment and am so thankful for the love and support of my family, friends and colleagues at ABC News. Like so many others, I will deal with this challenge one day at a time. If coming forward today gives one other person the courage to seek help, I'm grateful."
Now that Vargas is healthy, the reporter took up her post once more on Friday's edition of 20/20. After introducing to show, Vargas took a moment to thank the staff and viewers for their support during her recovery and Muir later fully explained the situation while interviewing her mother, Anne Vargas.
"We're very proud of her for saying, 'I'm going to talk about it, tell people what I've been through, how it happened, and how I got through,'" Anne said of her daughter's interaction with the media. "And then get back to work."
20/20 airs Friday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC. Click the video below to see Vargas' spot on good Morning America.
