Scarlett Johansson ditched the glitz and glam to pose without an ounce of makeup for Vanity Fair's annual Hollywood issue.

The 29-year-old sported a gray sweatshirt and a pendant necklace as she flashed a big grin for the camera.

Johansson was photographed by American artist Chuck Close, who took the pictures with a 20-by-24 inch Polaroid camera.

"I don't do glamor shots, and they're not airbrushed or whatever. So they can be, um...they can be rough. So I need to talk people through it," Close said in a behind-the-scenes video featured on the magazine's website.

"They have to give up a great deal of vanity in order to do it. And it takes a real act of generosity and faith on the part of the subject to go with it and to give me their image without having any control over what's gonna happen."

Johansson was one of 20 A-listers photographed by Close without any touch ups. Others include Julia Roberts, Kate Winslet, Brad Pitt, Harrison Ford, Bette Midler and Oprah Winfrey.

The photographer also revealed the mixed reactions he expects to receive from the public about his recent work.

"This will be shocking to people," Close added. "There will be people who think I didn't glamorize the subject enough and they'll think I was cruel... There will be people who say 'Thank god, somebody shows people as real people, the way they are.'"
