Michael Sam Boyfriend?: University Of Missouri Students Supporting Football Star Against Anti-Gay Protesters [VIDEO]
After football player Michael Sam revealed he was gay on Feb. 9, a number of people expressed their opinions, including a group of anti-gay protesters.
On Saturday afternoon, protesters from the Westboro Baptist Church reportedly showed up to a men's basketball game at the University of Missouri, according to Bleacher Report.
It appears that students on campus knew that the church members would be coming since one of them created a Facebook event called One Wall, One Missou, which invited students to stand with Sam.
"We understand that each person will have his or her own personal reasons for attending this event, but we can all agree that Westboro's hate is wrong," the event's page had written. "The focus of this wall is unification behind Sam to represent this school as One."
The event page consisted of rules, including one that said not to attack any of the protesters.
"Do not engage their protesters physically or verbally. The strength of our statement is in our spirit," the page said. "No signs, no yelling, no hate. We can't stand unified against Westboro if we act in the way they do."
The protesters had supposedly planned to be at the arena at 1:30 p.m. so the students planned to show up at 1:00 p.m.
During the game, students sang school fight songs as the protesters had apparently taken place. When the game was at halftime, the school received the Cotton Bowl trophy, which Sam had reportedly held up, leading the crowd in a standing ovation.
