However, viewers will have to judge for themselves whether or not his side of the tale can be believed.

Writers for the NBC drama have managed to keep Red's (James Spader) greatest secrets tightly under wraps, and the truth about his family is no different. While the former government agent burned down his former home earlier in the season, the reasons for his arson where unknown.

While doesn't know why his family was killed, he carefully recounted the bloody scene he came home to 20 years ago while telling to Madeline Pratt (Jennifer Ehle). Although he may have been telling Pratt the truth because he cares for her on some level and wished to truthfully explain why he failed to meet her in Florence, Red was also playing her for information at the time.

Stopping short of explicitly confirming the tale spun during "Madeline Pratt," Spader has acknowledged the events of two decades ago profoundly impacted Red's life and continues to affect his choices.

"The experience that he had in the past - or any of the experiences that he has - informs why he didn't show up in Florence. But not showing up in Florence was not 20 years ago, yet the story he tells is 20 years ago. But it has informed his life since," Spader told Beyond the Blacklist. "I think there are a lot of places he hasn't shown up in the last 20 years because of what happened that night and because of what has happened subsequent to that night. The prism through which he sees relationships was forever changed from things that happened many, many years ago."
