Nyong'o beat out Sally Hawkins (Blue Jasmine), Julia Roberts (August: Osage County), Jennifer Lawrence (American Hustle) and June Squibb (Nebraska) for the respective honors. This is Nyongo'o's first Academy Award nomination and first win as well.

12 Years a Slave is nominated for eight other Academy Awards, including Best Motion Picture of the Year, Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role (Chiwetel Ejiofor), Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role (Michael Fassbender), Best Achievement in Costume Design, Best Achievement in Directing, Best Achievement in Film Editing, Best Achievement in Production Design and Best Writing- Adapted Screenplay.
12 Years A Slave also won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama.
Nyong'o also won a Critics Choice Award for Best Supporting Actress and a Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role.
Nyong'o's previous credits include Non-Sop and the TV Mini-Series Shuga.
