Doctor Who and Sherlock are widely known for drawing from the same creative well, so it comes as no surprise to learn that Steve Thompson will pen a script for the Twelfth Doctor after spending three seasons with Benedict Cumberbatch's highly functioning sociopath.

Will Peter Capaldi Leave 'Doctor Who' After Just One Season?

Known mainly for his work on Sherlock's "The Blind Baker," "The Reichenbach Fall," and "The Sign Of Three," Thompson is now set to craft the fifth episode of Doctor Who's season 8, according to The Guardian.

Although Thompson dipped his two into the world of the Doctor with season 6's "The Course of the Black Spot" and season 7's "Journey to the Center of the TARDIS," the author has not yet written for Peter Capaldi's newly regenerated Twelfth Doctor.

Are Danny & Clara An Item On 'Doctor Who'? New Set Footage Hints At Samuel Anderson's Character's Involvement

Outside of the announcement that Douglas Mackinnon is slated to direct, little is known about the untitled episode. CultBox alleges that Jonathan Bailey (Broadchurch) and Pippa Bennett-Warner (The Smoke) will feature as guest stars.

While Whovians wait for further details to emerge regarding Thompson's episode, there is plenty of info about Capaldi's first full-length debut as the Doctor. Set in Victorian London, the premiere will include appearances from Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh), Jenny Flint (Catrin Stewart), and Strax (Dan Starkey) while Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor will somehow manage to wrangle a phone call to future Clara before his death.

Doctor Who will return to BBC and BBC America later this year. Click the video below to see Clara (Jenna Louis Coleman) receiving Smith's call.
