'X-Men: Apocalypse' Rumors: Magneto Could Change Sides & Lead The Mutants, Movie Could Introduce Nemesis To Franchise [VIDEO]
With the epic scale that is being teased for the next X-Men movie, Apocalypse, it seems like a lot of changing sides could take place as the mutants try and fight off the new super villain and his cause. But could one of the most famed villains of all time switch to the good side?
It seems like Magneto could have a change of heart and move to help the X-Men if the Apocalypse storyline follows the comics. Michael Fassbender has already talked about how excited he was for the movie and hinted that he spoke with Simon Kinberg about adding a story for Magneto that could alter him significantly moving on.
Speaking with IGN on Monday, Fassbender said that he has spoken extensively with Kinberg about the story. "I've had these conversations with Simon and there's a certain strand of his story that I think is pretty interesting and would like to explore, if we could."
In the comics, Magneto is hurt when Legion comes and kills his friend, Professor Xavier, and leaves the X-Men hopeless. Magneto, in turn, takes the lead with the group as Apocalypse becomes more and more powerful, leading to an all-out war.
Magneto gathers a mutant army that includes Pietro, Wanda, Quicksilver, and Scarlet Witch (who are all also his children) and goes into hiding before starting a counter-attack. Other mutants who show up are Rogue, Gambit and Bishop.
Rogue is portrayed by Anna Paquin in the original trilogy and even showed up for a blip during Days of Future Past. It is also rumored that she had a larger role in the last X-Men movie but cuts forced her to be put on the cutting room floor, so she could have had an expanded role in the new timeline. Gambit is another name constantly linked with Apocalypse, specifically because 22 Jump Street star Channing Tatum has gone on the record multiple times saying he would play the role.
There is also the mutant, Nemesis, who shows up and causes problems for Magneto. He is a name who could pop up as a side villain to Apocalypse, and cause problems for the X-Men. He is Apocalypse's son and plays an integral role in the US assault.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in theaters on May 27, 2016.
