With the next X-Men movie set to include a lot of old characters with new faces, it seems like one of the fan-favorite characters from the previous movies could be making his return for the next installment.

A much rumored character who could return in Apocalypse is Nightcrawler, who was last seen in X2 and portrayed by Alan Cumming.

In the comics, Nightcrawler lived in the German countryside where he was not allowed to interact with human children, and was never told his demon-like appearance might be jarring to others. When Apocalypse appeared, the people of town rose up against the frightening mutant. A group of villagers stormed the house and knocked Kurt out before he was able to teleport.

Could Magneto Become The New Leader Of The X-Men In 'Apocalypse?'

Moments before Kurt would have been sacrificed in a ritual, Mystique, along with Magneto and Quicksilver, stormed the church. Mystique gunned down the humans who kidnapped her son before Magneto could stop her. Kurt was unable to deal with the sight of his mother's ferocity and teleported away.

When Kurt finally returned to his home, Quicksilver informed him that his mother had asked Magneto to look after him. Kurt became a part of the X-Men family that day and spent the next few years becoming a member of the team. Ironically, after seeing the world and the terror it had become in the hands of Apocalypse, Nightcrawler became one of Magneto's most deadly agents.

With Magneto (Michael Fassbender), Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), and Quicksilver (Evan Peters) set to return in Apocalypse, it would make sense to include this story and have Nightcrawler on the team for the movie.

If they go that route, it would be assumed that Cumming would not return in the role as they would look for someone younger.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set to open in theaters on May 27, 2016.
