Austin Mahone knows what it's like to win a Video Music Award, so he was there to help congratulate his tour openers former X Factor contestants Fifth Harmony.

The girl group won the MTV Video Music Award in the category Artist to Watch Sunday night in California.

"CONGRATS to @FifthHarmony for the big WIN You deserve it :)" Mahone tweeted. Mahone won the same prize last year. The girl group won for their hit Miss Movin On. They tweeted after the show, "OMG! This is SO incredible! Cannot believe we just won 2014 #ArtistToWatch!! Thank you so much Harmonizers!"

Mahone was nominated this year for the new award Best Lyric Video. Mahone was up against Demi Lovato, band 5 Seconds of Summer, pop superstar Katy Perry and rising star Ariana Grande. Mahone was nominated for his song Mmm Yeah while Lovato was nominated for Really Don't Care, 5SOS was nominated for Don't Stop, Perry for Birthday and Grande for her hit Problem.

Although it was a close race, new band 5 Seconds of Summer won the fan generated new award. "Thank you guys for voting and supporting. I was here tonight because of you all. Love you" Mahone tweeted after the event to his beloved Mahomies.

Mahone, along with Fifth Harmony, The Vamps and Shawn Mendes are currently on their summer tour. Their next stop is Tuesday night in Pittsburgh, PA before hitting Cincinnati, OH on Wednesday.
