The plot synopsis for the premiere episode of FX's American Horror Story: Freak Show has been released, in which one the last remaining freak shows in America tries to compete with the new era of television.

FX sent out a press release for the first episode of the upcoming installment in the horror anthology series. The episode is titled Monsters Among Us and comprises of the following details:

"One of the only surviving sideshows in the country struggles to stay in business during the dawning era of television. When police make a terrifying discovery at a local farmhouse, the eccentric purveyor of the freak show sees an opportunity that will lead her troupe either to their salvation or ruin."

The aforementioned "eccentric purveyor" of the troupe is Jessica Lange's new character Elsa Mars, who has previously been reported to be a German expatriate who owns the freak show in Jupiter, Fla. Among her troupe of freaks are conjoined twins Bette and Dot Tattler (Sarah Paulson), the bearded lady Effil Darling (Kathy Bates), a three-breasted woman Desiree Dupree (Angela Bassett) and a "lobster boy" Jimmy Darling (Evan Peters).

The premiere episode is written by series co-creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk and directed by Murphy, the first episode he has directed since the very first episode of American Horror Story.

American Horror Story: Freak Show is set to debut Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
