The new villain on American Horror Story is Twisty the Clown, played by Zodiac villain John Carroll Lynch. While he is created in the same vein as Rubber Man from AHS: Murder House and Bloody Face from AHS: Asylum, he may just be the horror anthology series' scariest creation yet.
"We said in the writer's room that if we were going to do clowns, we were going to create the most terrifying clown of all time," series co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed to BuzzFeed News recently.

In fact, Twisty the Clown is said to be so scary that Murphy is concerned his may be too scary for the viewing audience.
"It's heart-stopping what he does. I'm worried. I'm worried that people are going to have cardiac arrests... The clown's intro in the first episode is ... even I was terrified of it," Murphy admitted. "It's brutal. Two crew members told me they have had nightmares about this clown since we started shooting and they're not even scared of clowns. I think he's pretty extraordinary because, when you see why he's a clown and why he's wearing the mask ... just you wait."
The man playing Twisty has even noted that people on set are scared of him. The 6'3" Lynch noted, "Just standing around in the makeup, not even filming. They're freaked out."
Lynch went on to explain that despite Twisty's actions being so "horrific" in Freak Show, his motives for doing so are actually quite "pure." He elaborated that he was interesting in reflecting a certain evil reality to what humans are capable of, even if they have the most "wonderful" of intentions.
American Horror Story: Freak Show begins Wednesday, Oct. 8 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
