Colorado Shooting: James Holmes Charged With 24 Counts of Murder, 116 Counts of Attempted Murder
James Holmes was formally charged with 24 counts of murder and 116 counts of attempted murder.
The details of the charges were not disclosed for the former graduate student.
According to CBS News, one count was for possession of explosives and one count was for committing a crime of violence.
Holmes did not enter a plea nor did his attorneys on his behalf.
It was announced that he would be charged for two counts of murder for each of the 12 people he killed during the shooting rampage. The attempted murder charges will include Holmes' attempt to kill police when he booby trapped his apartment with explosives.
There were several arguments among the attorneys during the hearing. Holmes' defense lawyers wanted to file a motion against the knowledge of a package Holmes sent to his psychiatrist a week before the July 20 incident being revealed to the media. According to several reports, the package contained a letter and drawings describing the shooting. Local authorities have since retrieved the package as possible evidence.
Holmes' defense attorneys requested that cameras and video be banned from the courtroom. They argued that his right to a fair trial would be affected by the media coverage. Last week's hearing was televised through a live feed video monitor.
