There is new speculation floating around about the concept for the fifth season of FX's American Horror Story, suggesting that it may be another period piece.

'American Horror Story' Showrunner Discusses 'Space' Theory For Season 5

American Horror Story co-creator Ryan Murphy spoke with Entertainment Weekly about a very specific clue included in a recent episode of AHS: Freak Show. The clue was a cop handing Maggie (Emma Roberts) a coffee cup with a distinctive top hat on it.

"That is a big season five clue!" Murphy teased. "It's an arcane clue, but it's very purposeful, and it illuminates something that you'll be like, 'Oh! You dirty b------!'"

With this in mind, one Reddit user by the name of ace_VXIII suggested one theory that seems plausible for what the fifth season will be centered on.

They believe that this is in reference to Operation Top Hat, described as a local field exercise that took place in Fort McClellan, Ala. in 1953. This field exercise used human subjects to test various biological and chemical warfare for decontamination.

The Reddit user believes that this type of human experimentation mixed with government conspiracy and possibly aliens could be the plot of Season 5.

If this is the concept, it would be the third period piece season after Asylum took place in 1964 and Freak Show takes place in 1952. With this new season potentially being in 1953, it would allow for more crossover between seasons, which aligns with Murphy's recent revelation that all the seasons are interconnected.

Murphy and company have neither confirmed nor denied this theory about Season 5.

American Horror Story: Freak Show airs Wednesdays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on FX.
