Legendary comic book artist Joe Kubert has died at the age of 85. His death was confirmed by his son David Kubert. He was best known for his work in creating DC Comics characters Sgt. Rock and Hawkman.

Kubert, known as comic book royalty, founded the "The Kubert School", a school of cartooning which has raised a generation of cartoonists from all over the world. His students include his sons Adam and Andy who are both notable comic book artists.

Kubert and his son Andy were reportedly working on "Before Watchmen: Nite Owl". DC is set to publish Kubert's final solo work in October, called "Joe Kubert Presents".

Artist Dave Gibbons tweeted: "Reliable source confirms that Joe Kubert had been in hospital and has passed away. So sorry to hear this. A great artist and a great man."

Kubert immigrated to the States with his parents from Poland. He was the son of a butcher raised in East New York. He had written in his first graphic novel "Yossel": "I got my first paying job as a cartoonist for comic books when I was eleven-and-a-half or twelve years old. Five dollars a page. In 1938, that was a lot of money". He attended Manhattan's High School of Music and Art.

Kubert was inducted into the Harvey Awards' Jack Kirby Hall of Fame in 1997 and Will Eisner Comic Book Hall of Fame in 1998.

He is survived by five children: Andy, 50; Adam, 52; David, 58; Lisa, 54; and Danny, 57.
