The Longmire writers are officially back and hard at work penning the popular crime drama's fourth season for Netflix.

'Longmire' Begins Extras Casting In Santa Fe

On Thursday writer Tony Tost revealed that they were back in the writer's room listening to some classic Native American rock music for inspiration.

Tost's message happens to coincide with a tragic anniversary which author Craig Johnson, who wrote the book series on which the drama is based, helped bring attention to the day before. On Wednesday Johnson shared a message from a Longmire fan who noted the 150th anniversary of the Sand Creek Massacre. Each year thousands of Native Americans return to the battle side in Colorado to remember those who lost their lives generations before.

In 1864, volunteer U.S. soldiers launched an attack which claimed the lives of men, women, and children. Claiming victory, the soldiers seized the land and stole jewelry as souvenirs from the battleground.

As one of the few programs on television to address Native American life in the United States, Longmire has often been praised by viewers for its awareness about an area which has largely gone unnoticed in modern America.

With production beginning in March, Longmire will likely return on Netflix for its fourth season during the second half of 2015.
