The couple "separated amicably earlier this year and have continued to be friends and co-parent their children," their reps said in a statement. "We would ask that you respect their privacy and that of their children during this time."
Burton, 56, and Bonham Carter, 48, who met while filming Planet of the Apes in 2001, teamed up for several more films together, including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in 2005 and 2012's Dark Shadows.

During an interview with The Guardian in 2010, Bonham Carter spoke about the ways her relationship changed her.
"He's made me more aware. He thinks I overact all the time. He's got a thing about me having a very mobile face," she said. "He likes to simplify things, I complicate them. I think we can do this or this or this, optionitis, then I get frozen because I don't know which one."
As for how she changed her beau, Bonham Carter said she made him "talk more."
"He didn't really talk before. He's much shyer than me. Every sentence was unfinished. I used to say he was a home for abandoned sentences. Now he actually finishes them," she added.
In October 2013, however, photos published by the New York Post showed the director was photographed in what appeared to be an intimate moment with a woman who wasn't Carter.
However a rep for the actress denied any infidelity, saying, "The pictures were taken whilst they were out and the large group includes family, friends and work colleagues."
