Mario Cuomo News: President & Mrs. Obama, Alec Baldwin & Other Celebs Show Respect For Governor's Death [VIDEO]
Mario Cuomo, the former New York governor, passed away on Thursday Jan. 1 and his family is receiving an outpouring of love.
On Friday, New York Daily News reported that Cuomo died at 5:15 p.m. of heart failure while surrounded by family in his Manhattan apartment.
Sadly, his son, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, was in Buffalo delivering his second inaugural address.
Govenor Mario's death has sparked an outpour of emotion on Twitter and various other social networks, and politicians and celebrities took to their social media sites to honor the late New York governor.
According to Yahoo, President Barack Obama released a statement expressing his deep condolences to the Cuomo family during this difficult time.
"Michelle and I were saddened to learn of the passing of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo," the President said.
"An Italian Catholic kid from Queens, born to immigrant parents, Mario paired his faith in God and faith in America to live a life of public service - and we are all better for it. He rose to be chief executive of the state he loved, a determined champion of progressive values and an unflinching voice for tolerance, inclusiveness, fairness, dignity and opportunity."
Katie Couric, Larry King, Alec Baldwin, Russell Simmons, Mike Bloomberg and an array of other celebs paid tribute as well.
