Common and John Legend's Acceptance Speech Moment Was About Much More Than Music

1. She is determined to make the film and television industry a better place for Latino actresses who will follow in her footsteps.

"It was a win for me, because it allows Latinos to be seen in a different light ... it means everything," she said in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

She also told Modern Luxury Miami, "I want to play roles that I see in my reality. My sister is a successful investment banker; my other sister is a doctor. I want to see those roles. I want to see Latinas play roles that are empowering, that are strong, that breaking the norm!"

2. She is madly in love with her adorable boyfriend, Henri Esteve.

In almost every interview she does, she mentions her handsome man, Henri Esteve, in some capacity. Watch how he saved her life on Ellen.

5. She taught Ellen Degeneres how to salsa dance.

She's also a trained dancer with 11-years of experience under her belt. So, yea... There's nothing she can't do.

6. She can also rap and she's kinda good at it.

No really, she had to learn how to play a rapper for her leading role in the independent film, "Filly Brown." She told Entertainment Weekly she had no idea she would love rapping so much. "It was a beautiful discovery, and it was an art form I had never owned before... I was able to dabble in it and now I feel a little more confident. And hopefully however life turns out, I'll have more opportunities to do that."

7. She studied acting at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.

8. Besides being a positive representation of the Latina community, Rodriguez also brings awareness to thyroid disease by making her struggle with the illness public.

She was diagnosed at the age of 19. She told The Hollywood Reporter, "For a while, I would look at myself and what was on screen and in magazines and say, 'This is never going to be possible because there's no way I can attain that beauty size.' I had to look at myself and overcome the idea that I was limited by what God gave me."

11. She's no stranger to protesting and getting out there on the front lines to fight for the civil rights of all people.

She told Miami Modern Luxury, "At a very young age, I would go with my father on picket lines and fight for people's rights," which is why she always asks herself, "How do I, as Latina, female and single in the industry, change the social norms that restricted me as a kid?"

12. Before her breakout role as Filly, she starred on the popular soap opera "The Bold and The Beautiful" as Beverly.

She told the ladies of The Talk, her time there still helps her while on the set of "Jane the Virgin."

13. She's not afraid to say "no."

Rodriguez turned down the opportunity to play a maid in Lifetime's "Devious Maids" series because she "had seen that story before," she said to Pix 11 News.
