Nationwide restaurant Chipotle shocked some New Jersey customers recently upon the realization that their receipts were showing something unheard of; their order's total due was being rounded up to the nearest cent.

Chipotle is claiming that they are not involved in any scam to cheat paying guests out of their hard-earned bottom line, but it is just a way to more effectively reduce their long lines. The restaurant also apparently rounds down as well.

However, most of the customers feel like they have been ripped off, as the establishment did not technically make the little known fact anyone's common knowledge.

According to NJ, the company's spokesman Chris Arnold explained the rationale behind the discrepant procedure.

"The idea is simply to limit the possible combinations of change on cash transactions to keep the lines moving quickly in high volume areas. It was never our intention to have a policy that was confusing or misleading."

Arnold had also stated to the New York Times that Chipotle has not gained any profits from the now controversial approach.

As of August 1st, Chipotle locations in the state of New Jersey will no longer be rounding up their pennies, according to a company spokesperson who spoke to Consumerist. However, the rest of the United States locations are still to be determined.
