NCAA Football Scores 2012: Star Freshmen & Week 1 Results
Week 1 of NCAA football kicked off on Saturday with some great competition amongst some big name teams. However, there were some very notable freshman performances that caught the eye.
Rookie Northern Iowa quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgan kicked off his collegiate career by putting up very impressive numbers against Wisconsin, as he went 18-for-34 with 265 yards and 3 touchdowns without throwing a single interception.
The youngster's end zone passes for 2, 55 and 31 yards show the great range of the Iowa standout, as he is clearly able to make the long range plays out of the pocket along with the equally important short ones.
Georgia's running back Todd Gurley played a large part in his team's victory over Buffalo. The freshman showed off his running game by racking up 100 yards and scoring 3 touchdowns. Gurley even averaged an excellent 12.5 yards per carry.
During one possession, he went on a 55-yard touchdown run. The star back is also a kick returner who put up 69 yards on returns and had reached the end zone on a 100-yard run during the 1st quarter of play. Nonetheless, the rookie definitely opened eyes in his NCAA regular season debut.
Miami Hurricanes running back Duke Johnson was another freshman who showed his electricity out of the back field in Week 1. Although he had just 7 carries, he did put up 135 yards and averaged 19.3 of them per carry. Johnson scored 2 touchdowns in the contest as well. Showing his versatility out of the running back post, he also made 3 catches for 10 yards.
Alabama's running back T.J. Yeldon opened eyes with his impressive performance, as he totaled 11 carries for 111 yards and 1 touchdown. The offensive talent to be reckoned with averaged 10.1 yards per carry as well. If team quarterback AJ McCarron ever needs the pressure off of his passing game at some point in the season, Yeldon is undoubtedly the man in the backfield for the job.
With only one week of NCAA play in the books, competition is sure to heat up. When the going gets rough and competitive, it will be make or break time for the respective rookies to keep going.
Nonetheless, Kollmorgan, Gurley, Johnson and Yeldon are just a handful who clearly have the skill set that it takes thus far.
