As is tradition the reigning champions have the privilege of opening up the new season in front of a home crowd. Since moving the NFL kickoff to a prime time spot on Thursday evenings in 2001, a defending Super Bowl champion has never lost the game. However, this year the season is opening up on a Wednesday evening so that the game does not clash with President Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention. It will be the first time in over 60 years that the NFL has played a regular season game on a Wednesday.
The Giants will have high expectations this year following their Super Bowl win last season, and they will have a tough test in their opening encounter against the Cowboys. The Giants though will be confident of coming out of the battle with a valuable win, having beaten them twice in 2011, and beating them in the final game of the season to win the NFC East.
New York have arguably the best defensive line in the NFL, however, they will have a stern test against a strong Cowboys offense.
The Giants will be looking to Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz to exploit the Cowboys, and Dallas will have a tough time stopping them.
However, without a doubt Eli Manning and the Giants will be expected to deliver in this opening game, and anything but a win will be seen as a disappointing result and start to the season. The Giants are being favored by 3.5 points at most betting outlets.
