iPhone 5 Release Date Today: 5 Things To Do With Your Old iPhone
Apple is set to unveil the highly anticipated iPhone 5 on Wednesday afternoon, Sept. 12, and the subsequent race to snatch one up will leave hordes of customers with older models they no longer need.
Here are five ways to make use of your older iPhone while you enjoy the new design and features of the latest iteration.
1. Sell it
eBay is always an option, but the auction site is likely to be flooded with old iPhones after the new model is unveiled. Another site to consider is Glyde.com, which helps users resell their iPhones. The site currently lists a 32 gigabyte iPhone 4S through Verizon as netting between $325 and $350 as long as buyers are interested.
2. Trade it in at Gamestop
Video game store Gamestop offers store credit or cash for used iPhones, iPads and iPods. Customers must make the transaction in a brick-and-mortar store, but Gamestop will pay up to $335 in store credit or $268 in cash for a 32 gigabyte iPhone 4S.
3. Use Apple's recycling program
Apple's recycling program takes broken phones for free and recycles the parts, but the company will pay for phones that are deemed to have monetary value. The catch? Apple's payout comes in the form of an Apple gift card, so customers can only use the money to buy more Apple products. However, a 32 gigabyte iPhone 4S with some scratches can be valued at around $280.
4. Use it as a stereo
Just spring for a speaker dock and your iPhone becomes part of a stereo system. Pandora or Spotify will buy all the music you need, or TuneIn can stream online radio stations for sports, news or talk shows.
5. Donate it to charity
Several charities will accept old phones which they then sell and use the profits to assist those in need. For example, Cell Phones for Soldiers uses the cash to buy calling cards for those in the armed forces. The old iPhone doesn't go directly to someone who needs it, but the money does make it way to a good cause.
