The San Francisco 49ers will take on the Detroit Lions in what should be an exciting matchup on Sunday at 8:20pm ET. The Week 2 showdown will put two of the game's brightest young quarterbacks against each other.

49ers QB Alex Smith made a statement last week when he went 20 out of 26 for 211 yards and two touchdowns against one of the league's finest teams in the Green Bay Packers. The playmakers he has a choice of utilizing include notable veterans Mario Manningham, Michael Crabtree, Randy Moss and Vernon Davis.

The San Francisco phenom will go up against a Detroit defense that has been plagues by injuries in their defense. Cornerback Bill Bentley is on the sidelines after suffering a concussion and safety Louis Delmas is still recovering from knee surgery. In addition to those respective players, CB Chris Houston is likely to be out of action due to an ankle injury.

According to the Detroit Free Press on Sept. 14, Lions defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham is still confident that his defenders can get the job done against a tough 49ers offense.

"The secondary we have, everybody's talking about 'em. The two things they do well, they work really hard, No. 1. No. 2, they're really smart guys. They really get into good spots and that's what's important in the back end."

Lions QB Matthew Stafford did not fare as well as Smith in his opener, as he only threw for one touchdown. However, he still managed to throw for 32 completions out of 48 attempts against the Rams.

Overall, Stafford has been performing as one of the sport's elite. After compiling over 5,000 yards in 2011, the youngster is now being compared to Drew Brees, Tom Brady and Aaron Rogers, amongst others. In order to maximize the rising star's abilities, the team must make it further into the playoffs this year.

Although Stafford is expected to perform up to par, the Lions defense may have their hands full with the 49ers stacked offense. Hence, the 49ers are expected by many to pull this one out in one of the NFL's premiere matchups for the second week of the season.
