It doesn't look like gamers are going to get their hands on the PlayStation 4 anytime soon, but that doesn't mean Sony doesn't have something else in the works.

An announcement took place ahead of the Tokyo Game Show on Wednesday, Sept. 19, that surprised everyone. Sony revealed that a new console will be available for the upcoming holiday season, and that the new game system will be a redesigned PlayStation 3.

So what's the new change? Think slimmer.

The Associated Press reported that Sony make this similar to the redesign that took place in 2009 of the "Slim" PlayStation 3 with the new model that will be lighter, smaller and have more storage space. It's reportedly going to be half the size of the original PlayStation 3 and even 17 percent smaller than the "Slim" version.

The slimmer model will also command a higher price for its size and larger capacity. The 250 GB version will retail for $269 compared to the $249 price tag for the 160 GB version, and the 500 GB version will keep the previous version's price at $299.

Sony is looking to initially make the new 250 GB PlayStation 3 a limited edition with a bundle pack that includes Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception:Game of the Year Edition, and a voucher for $30 worth of downloadable content in Dust 514. The new version 500 GB PlayStation 3 will similarly released as an initial limited edition with a bundle that includes Assassin's Creed 3 and a 30-day subscription to PlayStation Plus.

The new 250 GB game system from PlayStation will be released in North America on Sept. 25, while the bigger 500 GB version will come out a month later on Oct. 30. Both will be available on Oct. 4 in Japan.
