United manager, Sir Alex Ferguson, could be set to introduce some players back into the fold in tonight’s game, with some suggesting Wayne Rooney could feature.
Rooney was refrained from playing in last weekend’s emotional Liverpool game, with Ferguson saying “next week” would be when his striker would be available to return from his gashed thigh injury. However, it is unsure whether Rooney will play in this game or the upcoming Premier League game.
The League Cup has been used sometimes by Ferguson to bring back his injured players. He has done so in the past with Cristiano Ronaldo, who made his first start of the 2008-09 campaign against Middlesbrough after recovering from ankle surgery.
Many have suggested that Rooney may not get a starting spot but should make it to the bench to come on and feature at some point. He has a fantastic record against Newcastle and if he could come on and score a goal it would do his confidence some good.
Rooney had a torrid game against former side Everton in United’s opening Premier League game, and he was subsequently dropped for the Fulham game five days later. He did feature though, and ended up sustaining a nasty gash on his thigh that has kept him out for the past month.
Rooney is not the kind of player who will enjoy being out on the sidelines for too long though and he will be urging Ferguson to put him back in the side as soon as possible so he can make an impact and kick start his season.
