Amanda Knox Innocent: Meredith Kercher Roommate Acquitted Of Murder Charges Because She’s ‘Rich & American?’ [PHOTO]
Amanda Knox was handed a huge victory in her drawn-out murder trial March 27 when Italy's highest appeals court chose to overturn her conviction, but some of those who were drawn into the battle alongside her and ex-boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito are calling foul on the decision.
Meredith Kercher's Family 'Very Shocked' By Verdict
Patrick Lumumba, a bar owner and Knox's former employer when she lived in Italy back in 2007, has spoken out about the fact that Knox has gone free, calling her acquittal a bad sign for justice.
"This is not good for justice," he told The New York Daily News. "I think it shows the power available for rich people-she's American and rich."
"For a country like Italy this is not good," he added. "I think there were diplomatic problems with the U.S. , so they let her free."
Lumumba previously spent two weeks behind bars for his own suspected role in the death of Knox's former roommate, Meredith Kercher, after Knox lied and pinned the crime on him, saying she was forced to cover her ears so she wouldn't hear anything as he attacked Kercher.
Those allegations were later proven false and Lumumba was freed. He later filed a $54,000 defamation lawsuit against Knox and won, though he claims he has yet to see the payout.
Knox's false allegations against Lumumba were also considered key evidence early on in the trial of her guilt, and was a part of the evidence used to initially convict her of the crime back in 2009. She and Sollecito were later acquitted in 2011, and she returned to the U.S. They were both reconvicted last year before winning their final appeal.
