The Cincinnati Reds will go head-to-head with the San Francisco Giants, in what should be an exciting elimination game in the NL Division Series. The Reds will look for Game 5 starter Mat Latos to be their savior after the team came up short in Wednesday's 8-3 loss in Game 4.

With ace pitcher Johnny Cueto abruptly being pulled in Game 1 for an oblique strain, it was Latos who came up in a big way for Cincinnati. The 25-year-old only threw four innings and gave up only one run and four hits on just three days of rest. More impressive was the fact that the talented righty was inserted into the game without going through his typical pre-game bullpen session.

Over the course of the 2012, Latos has fared very well against the Giants. During the regular season, he pitched 16 innings and only allowed one run and six hits in two starts against them, which resulted in a 0.56 ERA. In his entire career against the club, the pitcher hasn't done too shabby either, as he's racked up 74 innings and a 2.19 ERA in 11 starts.

History has also shown that Latos usually performs better as the season progresses. From 2009 to 2011, the hurler posted a 3.52 ERA during the first half of the season while improving his ERA to 3.06 in the second half.

Interesting enough, within the last five months of the year Latos' earned run average has dropped monthly like clockwork: June (4.19), July (3.34), August (2.61) and September (2.27). The Reds are hoping that the trend continues further into October.
