Most nationwide polls have President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney in a dead head leading up to Election Day, and the results are similar in several state-specific polls in battleground areas that either candidate must pick up to win.
In one such state, Ohio, President Obama is currently ahead, but just by a hair. Data from polling firm Rasmussen shows the Democrat with support from 49 percent of the Ohio voters surveyed, while Romney is just behind with 48 percent, with 1 percent supporting a different candidate and 2 percent undecided.
But that small lead is not entirely significant, especially considering Rasmussen lists the poll's margin of error at +/- 4 percentage points.
Romney carries a slightly larger lead in another important swing state, Virginia. The GOP nominee is ahead of the incumbent there by 3 percentage points, according to Rasmussen. Romney has support from 50 percent of voters, while Obama lags behind with 47 percent. Of the remaining respondents, no large group of voters surveyed support another candidate, but 2 percent are still undecided.
Obama has a strong track record in Virginia, considering he became the first Democratic candidate for president to win the state since 1964 during the 2008 election, when he won Virginia by a margin of 53 percent to 46 percent.
In Iowa, yet another swing state, the candidates are deadlocked. The Rasmussen survey of Iowa voters found that both Obama and Romney have support from 48 percent of them. Of the other voters surveyed, 1 percent supports a different candidate and 2 percent are undecided.
Poll numbers may shift in the days following the third and final presidential debate, which took place Monday night, but the candidates will certainly be focusing on swing states like these as the campaign winds down to its final days.
