NOAA Hurricane Sandy Public Advisory: Life-Threatening Surges, Winds & Snow
NOAA's National Hurricane Center issued a public advisory on Monday, Oct. 29, to warn residents on the East Coast of the United States about the latest Hurricane Sandy news.
The following bulletin was posted on Monday at 8 a.m:

LOCATION...36.8N 71.1W ABOUT 265 MI...425 KM SE OF ATLANTIC CITY NEW JERSEY ABOUT 310 MI...505 KM SSE OF NEW YORK CITY MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...85 MPH...140 KM/H PRESENT MOVEMENT...NNW OR 330 DEGREES AT 20 MPH...32 KM/H MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...946 MB...27.94 INCHES"
Hurricane Sandy is currently moving at 20 mph north-northwest. The center of the storm is reported to be over the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Monday evening and Sandy's strong hurricane winds can extend outward up to 175 miles from its center.
Sustained tropical-storm-force winds are already occurring along the coasts of southern New Jersey, Delaware and eastern Virginia, according to the report. The winds are expected to hit New York City and Long Island, N.Y., later today. Water in the New York Harbor can potentially rise 6 to 11 feet above ground if the surge occurs at the time of high tide. Elevated water levels can result in coastal and bayside flooding.
Rainfall amounts of 4 to 8 inches are expected along the mid-Atlantic states.
Snowfall is reported as follows by the NOAA:
"SNOW ACCUMULATIONS OF 2 TO 3 FEET ARE EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS OF WEST VIRGINIA WITH LOCALLY HIGHER TOTALS TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY.
1 TO 2 FEET OF SNOW IS EXPECTED IN THE MOUNTAINS OF SOUTHWESTERN VIRGINIA TO THE KENTUCKY BORDER...WITH 12 TO 18 INCHES OF SNOW IN THE MOUNTAINS NEAR THE NORTH CAROLINA/TENNESSEE BORDER AND IN THE MOUNTAINS OF WESTERN MARYLAND."
