Hurricane Sandy has grounded many flights as carriers take precautions against the strong winds and heavy rainfall expected to occur across the East Coast.

Flights to and from the northeast United Stated have been cancelled across the nation, as reported by CNN.

British Airways has cancelled flights to and from New York, Boston, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Baltimore

American Airlines cancelled all flights to the east coast but they are operating a normal service to other parts of the country. All northeast flights stopped at 9 p.m. Sunday night, involving pre-cancellation of 1,431 flights from Monday to Wednesday.

United Airlines grounded flights between Sunday and Wednesday, including all those departing to Philadelphia, Boston, Toronto and Charlotte. See photo.

Delta Airlines said all flights from Washington to Boston, and out of New York and Philadelphia, were cancelled on Sunday and the same will be expected for Monday.

JetBlue Airways Corp canceled flights through Wednesday morning.

Also canceling all east coast flights are Britain's Virgin Atlantic, Quatar Airways, Germany's Lufthansa, Ireland's Aer Lingus, Australia's Qantas and Turkish Airlines

US Airways said it would have to cancel close to 2,000 flights starting Sunday because of Hurricane Sandy and that it would resume flights on Tuesday if flooding and the storm's duration over the East Coast permitted, according to Business Insider.

NOAA's National Hurricane Center issued a public advisory on Monday, Oct. 29, to warn residents on the East Coast of the United States about the latest Hurricane Sandy news.

The following bulletin was posted on Monday at 8 a.m:

"...SANDY NOW MOVING NORTH-NORTHWESTWARD AND ACCELERATING...
...EXPECTED TO BRING LIFE-THREATENING STORM SURGE AND COASTAL
HURRICANE WINDS PLUS HEAVY APPALACHIAN SNOWS...

Hurricane Sandy is currently moving at 20 mph north-northwest. The center of the storm is reported to be over the coast of the mid-Atlantic states by Monday evening and Sandy's strong hurricane winds can extend outward up to 175 miles from its center.
