Hurricane Sandy Tracker: Live Interactive Hurricane Sandy Crisis Response Map for East Coast Areas
Hurricane Sandy, or as others may call it "Frankenstrom" has already reached historic status as the gigantic storm continues to shake down the U.S. East Coast.
The strength of the hybrid super storm, mixing a winter storm from the West Coast, arctic conditions from the North, and raging mass will hit the Big Apple, Monday evening.
In response to this, Google's Crisis Response team has generated an interactive map to help make those affected by the epic weather understand its impact, PCMag.com reported.
The interactive map was built using the standard Google Maps data.
The map offers a view of Hurricane Sandy's path, a precipitation radar overlay (with adjustable translucence), public alert zones, and Red Cross safety shelter locations. This is all presented by Google's well-known red location pins.
This is not just a map with static graphics and an array of clickable location pins displayed. The map includes a sidebar that features a very deep and precise menu containing important information for local residents and concerned observers.
The side bar also features traffic condition overlays, neighborhood flooding zone estimates, satellite-resolution cloud imagery high wind probability graphics and webcams offering a peek at real-time conditions.
Additional features of the map also include a wealth of other information, all interactive and updated as the storm approaches New York's metro area.
The highly specialized map is programmed with information from the National Hurricane Center, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Weather Service, and the United States Geological Survey.
Experts predict that the super storm will affect up to 50 million people within an 800-mile area on the East Coast. This will put about 10 million people in danger of massive power outages.
Scheduled to last until Wednesday, Hurricane Sandy has also made history by causing Wall Street, both the New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ stock markets to shut down all on Monday.
Google has also created another crisis map, for residents in all five boroughs in the New York area.
